TENSHIN MEMORIAL MUSEUM OF ART, IBARAKI

Tenshin Memorial Museum of Art, Ibaraki is located in Izura that is known as a picturesque place for its beautiful seashore with different shapes of bays and a pine tree forest, which is one of the Top 100 beaches. The sound of its melodious waves is also selected for the Top 100 beautiful sound scenic spots.
Tenshin Okakura is known as a leading figure in modernization of Japanese art during the Meiji era and also a founder of Nihon Bijutsu-in (or the Art Institute of Japan). In 1906, Nihon Bijutsu-in moved to Izura from Ueno (Tokyo), and several artists including Taikan Yokoyama came with Tenshin. They worked hard and created wonderful paintings there. To commemorate Tenshin and their great achievements this museum was established on November 8, 1997 and it has displayed their excellent works.
